Music for the Movies: An Eclectic Selection

Carla Bley, David Amram, et al. Amarcord Nino Rota (I Remember Nino Rota) : Interpretations of Nino Rota’s Music from the Films of Federico Fellini. New York: Hannibal Records, 1981. HNBL 9301 [LP].

Miles Davis. Ascenseur pour l’echafaud (Lift to the Scaffold) : original soundtrack : complete recordings. Paris: Polygram Jazz, 1988. Fontana 836 305-2.

Georges Delerue. Music from the Films of Francois Truffaut. Nonesuch Film Series. Hugo Wolff conducts the London Sinfonietta ; the Fred Hersch Trio. New York: Nonesuch Records, 1997. Nonesuch 79405-2.

Philip Glass. Koyaanisqatsi : music composed for the film by Godfrey Reggio. New York: Nonesuch Records, 1998. Nonesuch 79506-2.
This 1998 re-recording contains “virtually all” of the music used in the score for Reggio’s 1983 film, including “about a half hour of material” that could previously be heard only by actually watching the film. The original soundtrack recording had been severely abridged to fit on two sides of an LP. A true cinephile, of course, would have to have both versions of the soundtrack, and should be able to discuss in-depth the pros and cons of the two versions.

Henry Mancini. Touch of Evil : original motion picture soundtrack. North Hollywood: Varese Sarabande Records, 1993. VSD-5414.

Ennio Morricone. The Legendary Italian Westerns. The Film Composers Series, Volume II. New York: BMG Music, 1990. 9974-2-R.

John Zorn. Filmworks X : In the Mirror of Maya Deren. New York: Broadway Books, 2006. New York: Tzadik Music, 2001.
Often beautiful, frequently evocative, sometimes instrusive musical score created by avant-garde jazzer Zorn for Martina Kudlacek’s 2001 biographical documentary about Maya Deren, the Joan of Arc of experimental film.
